Zebco’s ****. A nice fish has the power to tear them up from the inside out. Check out Bass Pro, they have some really nice baitcasters in all price range. Last year I bought two of the Bass Pro brand reels and I love them. Caught several big bass and a couple Northern Pikes and they’ve held up great.
i started with a zebco 33,but you need to be using a bait caster.diawa is the best.cast great, you can use as big a size line as you want to.no problem bringing in the big ones.good luck and long live the fisherman!
I recently bought a Shimano, but have been using mainly Quantum. A good solid baitcasting reel will run close to $200, but you can buy better for closer to $400 and lesser good ones for around $100…they do fine as well.
I would Pfluger trion there nice and would be great on large fish and line.
Baitcasters: Daiwa “Steez” or Shimano “Chronarch”.
For extra line and “heavier” fish try a Shimano “Calcutta”. #2 Abu Garcia “Morrum”.
Those are my picks for THE BEST B-caster reels!
Only 1 Spincast worth owning, (and it is still not as durable as spinning or b-casters!).
Daiwa “Goldcast” 3.
That’s my 2 cents!
I have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars since I was 12 years old on fishing reels. You have to find what works for you best. But to this day, I still have Zebco 33 reels on my Thundersticks.
Bait caster reels
Abu Garcia Revo SX – $149.95
Abu Garcia Revo Premier – $259.95
Daiwa TD-X Super Tuned- $209.95
Daiwa Steeze – $449.95
Spinning Reels
Shimano Stradic MGFA – $141.88
Shimano Stardic Mg FB – $229.99
Daiwa Steeze – $449.95
I own and use all reels listed but the Daiwa Steeze.
To me for the money the new Abu Garcia Revo Premier is hard to beat and it only weighs 6.3 oz…lightest aluminum reel on the market.
Sorry but this old coot can find ways of spending $550 buck on fishing gear besides a reel, thats just liable to get kicked over board…yuck!
For what you have described you want in a reel, I feel you have shorted your self on the rod length you got. The rod you bought is a great 6 ft rod, but if you are wanting to make long casts it would be a lot easier with a 6′-6″ rod or a 6′–8″ rod in Med Hvy action, with a fast or extra fast tip.
*Added* You asked what’s the best bass fishing reel that MONEY can buy?….My list reflects what I feel are the best reels on the market today, without money being a condsideration, sense you did not limit the dollar amount.
for the money, I think Abu Garcia baitcasters are about as good as it get, get one with as many ball bearings as you can as that will increase your casting distance… Daiwas and Shimanos are good as well..
Allot of people have mentioned some very good quality reels and they are but what i will say is that to achieve huge casts it takes you to do it not the rod or the reel, yest they may help but its your technique that casts a good distance, shimano are a good quality brand for high speed bait casters also i like abu Garcia with the magnetic breaking systems.
i got 5 to 1 you cant even throw a baitcast reel stick with your little zebco 33
I may be a little prejudiced, but I exclusively use Abu Garcia. I stopped using Spin Cast (closed face reels) 40 years ago. I fish stained and weedy water and they were always getting fouled. For Baitcast my latest is a Revo SX and I believe it is the best reel I’ve ever owned. But my 4600 C4 gets a lot of use as my primary second reel.
I fish in a lot of local Bass tourneys. But my real use is day to day pounding of the weed beds along millionaires row. ( a local name for the million dollar homes that front the Bay of Quinte in Ontario, Canada.
many good answers but you can spend all the money in the world on a reel and it won’t make you catch fish…….i have caught bass on every type of reel and rod combo from cheap to expensive…..it boils down to the place you are fishing and the bait you are using and how good you are at presenting the bait to the fish……spending big bucks will not make you a better bass fisherman
Go with a Phlegur. They are smooth, reliable, and reasonable cost. I recently got a Abu Garcia. Very nice.
You,ve probably got alot invested in that rod so I would at least pair it with a quality reel. For under 100 dollars you can,t go wrong with a quantum accurist and there available in more than one colour and come with a flippin switch. If you want to spend a little over 200 dollars you might want to consider a quantum energy.Generally the more bearings a reel has the better quality it is and smoother it operates.I use many different types but I recommended these because they fit in your palm good and perform well for me.
i like a pfluger president baitcaster
