San Bernard River and Galveston Fishing Combo

Fishing Tales and Son of Fishing Tales

Fishing Tales and Son of Fishing Tales

There are many great fishing tales in Texas and many great saltwater fishing places. This fishing article is about one of my favorite saltwater fishing spots.

Several years ago ( maybe twenty ) my dad Bill, my uncle Darrell and myself started a fishing trip. This fishing trip started out with my ambition of landing a Tarpon. Actually this meant we were going to my uncle and aunt's house on the San Bernard River south of Galveston, Tx.and leaving for Galveston the next morning dark and early. But that is one of my other fishing tales.

It did not take long before we started fishing the San Bernard River and surrounding areas on the second and sometimes the third day. It was kind of a no brainer. Get up in the morning, walk down to the dock, hop on Darell's Bay Pro and go fishing.

Now, not all my fishing Tales are true, but this one is and this is the part of this fishing story that makes the San Bernard River one of my favorite saltwater fishing spots in Texas. Once you are on the boat and ready for a day of fishing, you can fish the river, fish the inter-coastal, fish the many bays in the area or head out the mouth of the San Bernard and fish the surf. That's not the end of my attraction to the area for my saltwater fishing fix. If all the above options are not enough, you can point your fishing boat toward the offshore rigs and go deep sea fishing.

For those of you that are not familiar with the San Bernard River area, picture an area that has several Bays with a river connected to the Gulf of Mexico and all within easy reach by boat. At the same time much of this fishery is not so accessible by car or truck. Plus the areas that are reached by autos are spread out over a fairly large portion of coast.

I won't spin any huge fishing tales of my fishing exploits in the San Bernard River and the surrounding fisheries. For the most part this article is just to get people familiar with the area and the second is I don't have any. I can tell you that I have caught trout, Red Fish, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, Black Drum and an assortment of other saltwater game fish and at numbers that keep me excited about going back.

Their is another reason that always comes to  mind that I  look forward  to on my  fishing forays to the  San Bernard and it is a  small  restaurant called  2J's. This small restaurant is located on the shore of the San Bernard which is very convenient for the folks with a boat. Just tie up, walk in and order a very tasty meal at a very good price. The good folks at 2J's have no idea that I am plugging their restaurant and I doubt that they have Heard of Fishing Tales. I would be very surprised if very many folks from the area ever heard of my blog or that it is based out of Cibolo, Tx. just east of San Antonio, Tx. If you get a chance to stop by and have a meal sometime tell them Fishing Tales sent you.

Fishing Tales is always looking for fishing tales and tips and I hope that I can get more stories about the San Bernard River and not just my own which I do have more of to share in the near future.

I will be adding more information about the San Bernard River and the surround area but if you just can't wait stop by the website  Friends of the San Bernard

San Bernard River Mouth Opens Soon

Just like to let the folks down in San Bernard Tx. we appreciate all the hard work you have done on getting the San Bernard River opened up. I talked to Darrel ( my uncle ) today. He gave me the good  news about the Corp. of Engineers have started the work on dredging the mouth of the San Bernard River. I can hardly wait ( I think I will treat myself to a new fishing rod just to celebrate ) for my next fishing trip. I bet you can guess my destination ! I am l am located in Cibolo Tx. just out side of San Antonio Tx. so it is not a bad drive for such a good place to fish.

Over the years the San Bernard River mouth has silted in and shifted south, making it difficult for boats going out to the Gulf of Mexico and in my opinion hurt the fishing in the area as well as the economy. I predict the opening of the mouth of the San Bernard River will help both.

The San Bernard River project should be open by the end of February 2009 if all goes well.

Here are some pictures of the on going project. You can find more pic's and info about San Bernard and the San Bernard Rive at Friends of the River San Bernard

Fishing-Tales and Long Distance Casting

Off The Ground Cast

Off The Ground Cast

Fishing-Tales thanks Don for his fishing tip. Don and I go back many years and have fished together many time. But just remember this Don I taught you that long distance cast and one of these days I will tell the rest of the fishing-tales that go along with that fishing trip.

We were at the Padre Island National Seashore on a late beautiful October day with the beach nearly two ourselves.  As we headed south along the beach about 20 miles I took note of something odd.  I saw breaking water about 1/2 mile past the surf that.  The disturbed water was maybe 1/4 mile in length.  I stopped and with my binoculars I could see dolphin near the edges of the disturbance.  As I observed the area I noted it was moving slowly in a northerly direction.  I also realized that the cause of all this commotion was Jack Cravalle preparing for their migration.  They were feeding, stocking up for their long journey.
